About Gintama

Gintama is a manga series by Sorachi Hideaki and was released in WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP from 2003 - 2019.

The story follows Gintoki, a freelance Odd-Jobs ("Yorozuya") on his daily quest to navigate life, being a human in his late-twenties without any goals and money (can't we all relate?). Ten years before, Gintoki (as well as Sakamoto) fought in the "Joui War" against "Amanto", aliens from outer space, who sucessfully invaded Japan. The Samurai lost and have to deal with these new times now.
When Shinpachi, Kagura and Sadaharu (a dog) come into Gintokis life by sheer accident, they work together as "Yorozuya Gin-chan" and not only encounter the funniest comedic moments but also grow together als a family.

... To talk about Gintama would probably take me ages - and an entire website (which I'm going to create... one day :D) - but in short, it's a story about an extended Found Family and taking place in a Shonen World after the actual Shonen-tropey hero journey. It's filled with rather crude but excellent humor, satire, breathtaking action, and - aside from Sakamoto - a huge cast of wonderful characters and especially wonderful female characters.

Wait... where does Sakamoto come in all this?

Sakamoto is one of Gintokis oldest friends and one of the famous "Joui Four", consisting of himself, Gintoki, Katsura, Takasugi. These four were feared war heroes and their names are still widely known even though they lost the war.
Always a pacifist at heart, Sakamoto set out into space to become a infamous merchant.

"I've made up my mind. I'm going into space. If I stay on Earth, crawling around and fighting Amanto, I know how the future's going to turn out. Even as we speak, the Amanto keep coming and coming. We can't fight the tide of change. Fighting this war is only sending our comrades to their deaths, I don't want to see any more of our comrades die.
From now on, we've got to look at things from a different perspective. A perspective so high, we can see humans, Amanto and the whole world at once. That's why I'm going into space. I'll sail huge ships through outer space... and fish for stars."
